Bizsense’s Q&A with Ad Person of The Year, John Mills

Last week, Bizsense stopped by our offices to catch up with John about his recent Ad Person of the Year award from the Advertising Club of Richmond. You can read the article here.

“Richmond BizSense: How does it feel being named Ad Person of the Year? How were you announced at the ad club awards show?

John Mills: They announce it at the end; Scott Sherman (last year’s recipient) introduced me. Honestly, I was so caught up in the moment I don’t even remember what he said. I was excited and uncomfortable; it was just this surreal experience.

The recognition should really go to our team. I spearhead it because I run the agency, but none of the stuff that we do, whether it’s client work or our community engagement initiatives, would even exist if I didn’t have a team that was used to working in small-agency chaos and being really passionate, bright, caring people that are just “dive right into it” kind of people.”

The Hounds Are Off to the Races

James, our copywriter, is an avid cyclist. Over the years, he’s raced for several teams including VCU and the Carytown Bicycle Company U25 development team. While he was in college, he worked as a bike mechanic and salesperson at several shops around town. Whenever possible, we tie our personal passions into our culture at work. So, this Spring, we decided to team up with Cutaway USA, an elite road cycling team based out of central Virginia.

As the team’s title sponsor, we’ll be helping them bolster their social media presence and develop new content. Amateur teams need all the help they can get and social media is a key way for teams like Cutaway to grow. Their sponsorships help pay for race fees, travel and equipment.

“The Cutaway/RTH alliance is awesome because Release the Hound’s style of working represents the pack mentality that is at the core of the Cutaway team, we’re excited to see where this partnership goes and what we can do as a unit to better our community,” says Johnny Phan, Cutaway team rider.

In exchange for our help, Cutaway cycling has promised to help us execute a couple social-good projects in the community. We’re in the process of dreaming up ways for the cyclists to use their talents to help people in our region. In the meantime, we’ll be posting photos of their races and training rides right here.

John Mills Named Ad Person of the Year

We’re honored that founder John Mills was named the Advertising Club of Richmond’s Ad Person of the Year. The annual Advertising Show is a prestigious awards show hosted by the Advertising Club of Richmond. The event, which was held at the Altria theater this year, recognizes the best advertising work from around the region and also awards two scholarships to advertising students, the Harry Jacobs Scholarship and the Barabra Fultz Women in Advertising Scholarship.

Anne Stuart Teter, the incoming Richmond Ad Club President said “John Mills was ultimately selected because of his years of experience and the unique way in which Release the Hounds operates. It’s amazing that the agency dedicates 30% of its yearly workload and resources to social good initiatives.”

GroundWork for Eagle Bay

We’re happy to have recently released another GroundWork video for Eagle Bay Hardscapes. We created the GroundWork series as an accessible and easy way for people to learn about hardscaping and the capabilities of pavers. From product guides to videos on how to select a contractor or maintain your patio, the GroundWork series is an educational tool meant for contractors, homeowners and anyone else curious about hardscaping. Blackburn Inn Website Launch

We’ve been hard at work over the last few months and are proud to finally announce the website launch for our new client, The Blackburn Inn. In addition to the digital work, we’ve developed business cards, room key cards and other printed materials and signs for the luxury, boutique property. More to come on those elements.

The Blackburn Inn is an incredibly fascinating property located in historic Staunton, Virginia. Originally constructed in 1828, it was envisioned and influenced by master builder and Thomas Jefferson’s protégé, Thomas R. Blackburn. Blackburn was one of Jefferson’s highly recruited apprentices, and according to documents recently discovered, some believe that Blackburn was more responsible for the designs and craftsmanship of Jefferson’s work than previously documented.

Working on The Blackburn project has been a ton of fun for our team. The combination of a captivating story, a beautiful design foundation and passionate clients inspires us and reminds us why we do what we do.

Introducing Backyard Bliss with Patiyogi Steve

We’ve been hard at work developing a video series for one of our favorite clients, Eagle Bay Hardscapes. Selling pavers is about selling a lifestyle, not just a product. So, we developed the PatiYogi character to personify the work-life balance we all struggle with at times.

The SoundView Project

The SoundView Project is a live art experiment designed to bring awareness to youth music education. Over the course of a month, artists are challenged to write and record an EP in our storefront gallery. This gives the outside world a glimpse into the creative process and forces the artist to adapt and overcome the challenges of composing in front of bustling Broad St. The first SoundView Project was completed by Troy Gatrell of Way, Shape or Form. In the process, we were able to raise over $20,000 in instruments for Richmond City Public Schools, including completely funding a guitar program at Franklin Military Academy, the first of its kind.
